Posted on 4/15/2025 by Duggan Endodontics Office
Animated image of root canal toothAbout 95 percent of root canals are successful, and thanks to advances in dental technology and anesthesia, most patients experience minimal discomfort during the procedure. A root canal can save a damaged tooth and prevent a number of serious oral health issues from occurring in your future. There is no reason to worry about having to get a root canal, but there are some steps you can take after your procedure to ensure a successful outcome. Keep reading to learn more.

Do Not Smoke

Smoking cigarettes and using any other tobacco products can interfere with your body's healing process, prolonging your recovery period after any medical procedure, including a root canal. Plus, tobacco use is a significant risk factor for developing oral cancer, gum disease, and numerous other health issues, so it is a good idea to avoid tobacco even if you do not need a root canal.

Take Care of Your Oral Hygiene

It is normal to feel some tenderness around your affected tooth after having a root canal, but that does not mean you should avoid brushing or flossing. In fact, continuing your regular oral hygiene routine is crucial for keeping the surgical area clean and preventing another infection from forming. You will probably need to brush more carefully around the affected area for the first day or two after your procedure, but you do not need to use a special toothpaste or mouthwash unless we tell you to.

Monitor Your Pain Level

Discomfort level following a root canal will vary from person to person, but it is normal to have some soreness and tenderness around the affected tooth. We might suggest taking an over-the-counter pain medication or prescribe you a painkiller for temporary relief. Follow all of our instructions when it comes to taking medications, and call us if you develop severe pain or other symptoms such as a fever, chills, or difficulty breathing. If you have questions about preparing for or healing from a root canal, call our office today.
